In a rapidly changing world with continuous urban population growth, Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) has evolved into more than just an urban planning strategy. It represents a collective effort to shape the future of the urban communities we inhabit. TOD embodies an intelligent integration of efficient public transportation with dense and diverse land uses around transit nodes. At its core, TOD seeks to create walkable and bike-friendly environments, enabling people to conveniently access housing, workplaces, and essential services without reliance on private cars. This not only helps alleviate traffic congestion and reduce air pollution but also fosters healthier lifestyles and enhances opportunities for social interaction within the community.

In this issue of the ASA Journal, the focus is placed on Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), explored from multiple perspectives. These include theoretical frameworks presented in international symposiums, design challenges within the Thai context, and compelling case studies of local architectural projects that have adopted TOD principles —from master planning to architectural and landscape design details. Together, these contributions illustrate how TOD can serve as a powerful tool to drive urban livability alongside economic development.

ในโลกที่เปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็วและการเติบโตของประชากรในเมืองเป็นไปอย่างต่อเนื่อง การพัฒนาพื้นที่รอบสถานีขนส่งสาธารณะ (Transit-Oriented Development หรือ TOD) ได้กลายเป็นแนวคิดที่เป็นมากกว่าแค่กลยุทธ์การวางผังเมือง แต่คือความพยายามร่วมสร้างสรรค์อนาคตของชุมชนเมืองที่เราอาศัยอยู่ ซึ่งเป็นการผสานรวมกันอย่างชาญฉลาดระหว่าง การขนส่งสาธารณะที่มีประสิทธิภาพ เข้ากับ การใช้ประโยชน์ที่ดินอย่างเข้มข้นและหลากหลาย รอบ ๆ จุดเชื่อมต่อเหล่านี้ หัวใจสำคัญของ TOD คือการสร้างพื้นที่ที่เอื้ออำนวยต่อการเดินและการใช้จักรยาน ทำให้ผู้คนสามารถเข้าถึงที่อยู่อาศัย ที่ทำงาน และบริการต่าง ๆ ได้โดยสะดวกสบายโดยไม่ต้องพึ่งพารถยนต์ส่วนตัว ซึ่งไม่เพียงแต่ช่วยลดปัญหาการจราจรติดขัดและมลภาวะทางอากาศ แต่ยังช่วยส่งเสริมให้เกิดวิถีชีวิตที่มีสุขภาพดีขึ้นและการมีปฏิสัมพันธ์ทางสังคมที่มากขึ้นในชุมชน

ในวารสารอาษาฉบับนี้ จึงเน้นเนื้อหา Transit-Oriented Development หรือ TOD ทั้งจากแนวคิดทฤษฎีจากเวทีเสวนาระดับนานาชาติ ข้อท้าทายทางการออกแบบในบริบทไทย และกรณีศึกษาที่น่าสนใจผ่านโครงการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมในประเทศ ที่นำหลักคิดของ TOD มาประยุกต์ใช้ ตั้งแต่การวางแผนแม่บท ไปจนถึงรายละเอียดของการออกแบบสถาปัตยกรรมและภูมิทัศน์ ที่สะท้อนให้เห็นว่า TOD จะสามารถเป็นเครื่องมือในการขับเคลื่อนเมืองน่าอยู่ร่วมไปกับการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจได้อย่างไรบ้าง

The Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage (Lanna) presents the Thesis in Architecture Awards Lanna, a program established to showcase exemplary thesis projects by architecture students from universities across Northern Thailand. The initiative serves as a platform for emerging designers to present their work to the public, fostering academic progression, expanding professional exposure, and supporting the dissemination of new architectural ideas at both national and international levels.

The twenty finalist projects gathered in this publication illustrate a broad range of design approaches, including urban regeneration and community development, cultural heritage preservation, adaptive reuse, and experimental strategies for sustainability. Each project also raises questions and examines the role of architecture in relation to people and place. Collectively, these works offer insight into architectural education in Northern Thailand. Although each institution maintains its own methodologies and emphases, all shares a commitment and social responsibility in their students.

 

Thesis in Architecture Awards Lanna 2025 จัดโดย สมาคมสถาปนิกสยาม ในพระราชูปถัมภ์ (ลานนา) เพื่อนำเสนอความคิดสร้างสรรค์และวิสัยทัศน์ของสถาปนิกรุ่นใหม่จาก 7 มหาวิทยาลัยในภูมิภาคล้านนา สะท้อนพลังแห่งความหลากหลายทางความคิดด้านสถาปัตยกรรม ซึ่งหล่อหลอมจากอัตลักษณ์ทางวัฒนธรรม สิ่งแวดล้อม และบริบททางสังคมที่เปลี่ยนแปลงอยู่เสมอของภูมิภาคนี้

Architect’ 25 was inspired by the theme “Past, Present Perfect,” with the idea of looking back to the beginning in order to move forward. The event invited thoughtful reflection on our architectural heritage, offering the next generation of architects an opportunity to engage with the past through fresh and diverse perspectives.

This year’s exhibition also highlighted the role of the architectural profession in relation to people’s everyday lives, through urban development and adapting to changing environments. Examples included design concepts for emergency shelters in response to flooding, as well as the development of transit oriented districts (TOD) around public transportation hubs. These initiatives were carried out in collaboration with diverse professional associations, ensuring that design solutions address the needs of people and society in a sustainable way.

กลับสู่จุดเริ่มต้น เพื่อไปข้างหน้า คือสารตั้งต้นของคอนเซปต์งานสถาปนิก 68 “ทบทวนทิศทาง : Past Present Perfect” ที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งมีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อนำพาเราย้อนกลับไปสู่จุดเริ่มต้น เพื่อก้าวเดินต่อไปข้างหน้าอย่างมั่นคง งานในครั้งนี้เปิดโอกาสให้ผู้เข้าร่วมได้ทบทวนอดีตอย่างลึกซึ้ง พร้อมทั้งเปิดมุมมองใหม่ๆ แก่สถาปนิกคนรุ่นใหม่ในการเข้าถึงประวัติศาสตร์ทางสถาปัตยกรรมจากหลากหลายแง่มุม

นิทรรศการในปีนี้ยังนำเสนอวิชาชีพสถาปนิกที่สัมพันธ์กับชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของผู้คนในเชิงการพัฒนาเมืองและการอยู่ร่วมกับสภาพแวดล้อมที่เปลี่ยนแปลง อย่างแนวคิดการออกแบบที่พักพิงฉุกเฉินสำหรับสถานการณ์น้ำท่วม หรือการพัฒนาพื้นที่รอบสถานีขนส่งสาธารณะ (TOD) ซึ่งเป็นการทำงานร่วมกับพันธมิตรสมาคมทางด้านวิชาชีพที่หลากหลาย เพื่อให้งานออกแบบตอบสนองต่อผู้คนและสังคมได้อย่างยั่งยืน ภายในงานยังมีการจัดเวทีเสวนาระดับนานาชาติและนิทรรศการแสดงสินค้า ซึ่งเปิดพื้นที่ให้ผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากภูมิภาคต่างๆ ได้แลกเปลี่ยนองค์ความรู้ เสริมสร้างความเข้าใจ ความร่วมมือ และเครือข่ายวิชาชีพอย่างเปิดกว้าง

Designed by Jo Nagasaka of Schemata Architects, Hotel Jin reimagines the former Ariake-so, an 1868 wooden inn on Tsushima, as a renewed gateway between Japan and Korea. Situated closer to Busan than to Kyushu, the island has long welcomed Korean visitors, and its cultural crossings form the project’s foundation. Retaining the Meiji-era façade, the renovation introduces a transformed interior that reveals its renewal through carefully reconfigured openings. The first floor—previously altered through fragmented renovations—was cleared and rebuilt as an open, flexible space for daily use and community events, setting the stage for experiences above. On the second floor, the removal of the central corridor and addition of a new staircase created an atrium linking east and west rooms. White defines the newly renewed areas, expressing the mingling of histories and the shared horizon between Japan and Korea.

“Villagers cultivate rice as it is their invaluable asset.” This sentiment encapsulates the cultural and agricultural foundation upon which the Lanna Rice Research Center at Chiang Mai University is built. In Northern Thailand, rice is more than a staple crop—it is a symbol of identity, a living heritage, and a vessel of intergenerational knowledge. The architecture of the center, designed by Hanabitate Architects under the direction of Prof. Dr. Nawit Ongsavangchai, was developed to express these ambitions through spatial clarity, contextual sensitivity, and long-term sustainability.

Beyond its clear functional achievements that meet both experimental goals in the lab and everyday needs for people of all ages, the project has also earned international recognition, winning the Golden Pin Design Award 2024 in the Spatial Design category and being finalist for the Architizer A+Awards 2025.

“ชาวบ้านปลูกข้าว เพราะข้าวคือทรัพย์สมบัติที่ประเมินค่าไม่ได้” สำหรับศูนย์วิจัยข้าวล้านนา มหาวิทยาลัยเชียงใหม่ ผู้มองว่าข้าวในภาคเหนือเป็นมากกว่าพืชอาหารหลัก แต่เป็นสัญลักษณ์แห่งตัวตน เป็นมรดกที่มีชีวิต และเป็นคลังของภูมิปัญญาที่สงต่อจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น งานออกแบบศูนย์ฯ แห่งนี้โดย Hanabitate Architects นำโดย ศ.ดร.ณวิทย์ อ่องแสวงชัย จึงแปลความผ่านงานสถาปัตยกรรมที่โปร่งชัด สัมพันธ์กับบริบท และยั่งยืนในระยะยาว

นอกจากผลลัพธ์ที่ปรากฏชัดในเชิงฟังก์ชั่นการใช้งานที่ตอบกับทั้งภาคทฤษฎีในห้องปฏิบัติการและภาคปฏิบัติสำหรับผู้คนทุกเพศทุกวัยแล้ว ในเชิงคุณค่าของงานสถาปัตยกรรมในเวทีระดับนานาชาติ ยังชนะรางวัลในหมวด Spatial Design รางวัล Golden Pin Design Awards 2024 และเข้ารอบสุดท้าย Architizer A+Awards 2025

This article is a record from the solo exhibition Afternoon Person by Tae Pawit Pichetrangsan, held at Bangkok CityCity Gallery in June 2018. The exhibition comprises more than 50 works, including paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, video installations, and animations. Yet, the most distinctive works, which seem to represent Tae Pawit’s main artistic path, are his drawings—marked by elements that are spontaneous, raw, and imperfect. Some of his working concepts and approaches are captured in this small publication.

เรื่องราวที่เป็นเหมือนบันทึกจากงานนิทรรศการเดี่ยวของ เต้ ภาวิต พิเชียรรังสรรค์ ในชื่อว่า Afternoon Person ซึ่งจัดขึ้นที่ Bangkok CityCity Gallery ในเดือนมิถุนายน 2018 ประกอบด้วยเพ้นท์ติ้ง ดรอว์อิ้ง ประติมากรรม อินสตอลเลชั่น วิดีโออินสตอลเลชั่น และอนิเมชั่น ร่วมๆ 50 กว่าผลงาน แต่ผลงานที่โดดเด่นที่สุดที่ดูเหมือนจะเป็น ‘ทาง’ หลักของเต้ ภาวิต คืองานวาด ซึ่งมีองค์ประกอบของปฏิกิริยาตอบสนองแบบฉับพลันทันใด ความดิบและความไม่สมบูรณ์แบบ แนวคิดในการทำงานบางอย่างของเต้ ภาวิต มีอยู่ในสิ่งพิมพ์เล็กๆ เล่มนี้

Calvin Tsao holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley and a Master of Architecture degree from Harvard University. He is a founder of a leading New York-based practice, Tsao & McKown. Taso is a recognized and leading voice in contemporary architecture whose work draws from a lively engagement with a variety of art forms. 

In 2004, Tsao was in Bangkok working on a hotel redesign project. Thingsmatter’s Savinee Buranasilapin and Tom Dannecker had a talk with him, covering architecture, design, humanistic issues, and his personal stories.

Calvin Tsao สำเร็จการศึกษาระดับปริญญาตรีสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์จากมหาวิทยาลัยแคลิฟอร์เนีย เบิร์กลีย์ และปริญญาโทสถาปัตยกรรมศาสตร์จากมหาวิทยาลัยฮาร์วาร์ด เขาเป็นผู้ก่อตั้งสำนักงานสถาปนิก Tsao & McKown ในกรุงนิวยอร์ก ซึ่งถือเป็นหนึ่งในสำนักงานชั้นนำ Tsao เป็นสถาปนิกที่ได้รับการยอมรับและมีบทบาทสำคัญในวงการสถาปัตยกรรมร่วมสมัย ผลงานของเขาได้รับแรงบันดาลใจจากการผสมผสานศิลปะแขนงต่าง ๆ 

ในปี พ.ศ. 2547 Tsao เดินทางมาทำงานที่กรุงเทพฯ ในโครงการออกแบบปรับปรุงโรงแรม และได้พูดคุยกับ Savinee Buranasilapin และ Tom Dannecker แห่ง Thingsmatter ซึ่งนอกจากเรื่องราวของสถาปัตยกรรมและการออกแบบแล้ว ยังมีประเด็นที่น่าสนใจเกี่ยวกับมนุษย์และเรื่องราวส่วนตัวของเขาด้วย
