At the beginning of the 20th century, a large-scale furniture industry was in place, but production methods still relied on traditional labor-intensive techniques. Many of the pieces of furniture used as decoration and display remain with us even today, but a more radical direction of furniture design came in the 20th century with the Modern Movement.

This pioneering work in furniture initiated the mass production industry. Important to this context is the furniture designed at the Bauhaus, for example, the tubular steel cantilever chair by Marcel Breuer, which is regarded as the perfect expression of the new modernity, which marked a new direction for furniture design. The Modernists, along with major manufacturers, continued developing throughout the century. Featured in this small book are some of the most famously expressed ideas of this era.
